Shampoo, rinse...Repeat

One of the reasons I had started reading for my degree in history was because I was struck by the way history does indeed repeat itself. Governments and religious organizations are constantly making the same mistakes, the same wars are being raged, achieving nothing but death, destruction and the occasional genocide thrown in for shit and giggles. Having said that is it any surprise therefore that in our been there, done that society we too still manage to get caught in this way in our interpersonal relationships.

Cycles, cyclic activity. Was it Albert Einstein who said that insanity was doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results? If this is indeed true then dare I say we are all insane. Why is it so hard for us to learn from our mistakes?

Battered wives are an example. They stay for love, they stay because they want to believe that he means it when he says he's sorry and he will never hurt them again. They stay because they are scared, they fear for their lives should they leave, they fear for their children's lives. You are damned if you do and damned if you don't. You leave he kills you and the children, if you stay, you may be saved but he may get at the children.

Rogue spouses/boy/girlfriends what have you, ignore the needs of the other half in the relationship thinking only of themselves, retreating into themselves and then act surprised when the neglected partner leaves. Taking time for yourself is good but not to the exclusion of all others. Relationships are hard work, it is all about give and take, compromise is key. Work on that.

Some parents shout at their children. Teach children from an early age to disrespect elders, peers, those in authority and then cry into the television "he was a good boy" when an altercation turns deadly. Why can you not teach your children love and respect? Why must there always be fighting, anger, hate?

Those elected into office abuse their power. Don't listen to the voice of the people, thinking they know best whilst lining their pockets. Elections come, elections go, the people will not vote blindly forever.

Cheaters always cheat...some try to reform they really do, but temptation is strong

Liars always lie and even when they don't people have become so accustomed to them lying that their authenticity is doubted.

Men are only as good as their word...there are so few good men around

These are but a few, there are many more. How do you perpetuate the insanity?

I have to play devil's advocate here, part of what you're implying is that people cannot change their nature and I know for a fact they can. I've known guys who used to be out taking all sorts of drugs every night and raving all the time who are now staying in every night to study and earn new qualifications for a better life. And I know one guy who used to cheat on his girlfriends who has now turned a complete leaf and would never do anything like that again.

People can change, people can learn from their mistakes.
Statistically speaking, however, it may be fair to say that *not many* people do.

Peace be unto you *hugs*

You are right of course some do change. Then there are those like myself who never will and we are legion

Anybody can change. Anything can be changed. All it takes is the will. The will depends on inspiration. Inspiration depends on hope and idealism and looking forward. That's all it takes.

Your post reminds me of this morning, reading the papers. I asked myself "What is going on with the men of TT?" Almost every story on the first 3 pages of the Express (or was in Guardian?) had to do with young girl 8 (raped and killed by man), young girl 7 (raped by two grown men), woman found raped with throat slashed and face cut open in Manzanilla ... What is going on? And these are only the few stories that end up in the papers.

I'm not normally cynical but I'm low lately and I'm cynical lately and I just think that we'll keep having problems in the world as long as people continue to be insane. Stardust has the right idea. Just sing and chirp all day long! :)
