Turtle watching

In a wave of what can only be described as optimism, I decided to organise a trip to Matura to go see the Leatherback turtles. Yes I repeat once again for the disbelievers, I, one of the most disorganised people in the world decided to organise a trip to see the Leatherback turtles and I gave myself a week amd a half grace to pull it all together. You have to admit once I make up my mind I make up my mind.

I won't bore you or torment myself with recounting the events leading up to the trip, just let it be known that from 20 confirmed it boiled down to 13 actual people going. That aside it was loads of fun, we saw about 10 turtles in various stages of completion and actually got our very own and got to witness the entire process from beginning to end, it was wonderful!

This had to have been my fourth time going to see the turtles laying but my first visit to Matura and also the only visit where I could actually see and appreciate everything that was going on. I was quite impressed, there were knowledgeable guides who were a wealth of information and while there were a lot of groups that came down that night it was very well organised and as I said before there were so many turtles coming up on the beach that each group were able to get their very own turtle so that there were not too many people around one turtle.

You can only take pictures and touch the turtles when they start to lay, not when they are coming up on the beach, not when they are digging and certainly not when they are finished and start to camouflage the area.

So tiny, so hard to believe that they get to be so big. Over 5ft long and 800Lbs

They really are wonderful creatures. I haven't had the opportunity to see any babies, you are so lucky

That is so flippin' cool! I've always wanted to see this as I've seen many a documentary on these turtles and similar species elsewhere and it's just soooo amazing! You're so lucky! And good for you to take the initiative and organize the trip!
